Nursing Home Compare: see homes side by side

Choosing a nursing home usually comes down to two to four places. Put them side by side on the things that matter most, using CMS's official ratings, nurse staffing, inspections and fines for every Medicare- and Medicaid-certified home. It's free, takes about two minutes, and your shortlist stays in your browser.

  1. 1

    Find the homes you're considering

Search near you or near a family member, or browse a state and city.

  2. 2

Tick Compare on up to four homes

Every list on the site has a Compare box on each home, and so does each home's own page. Your picks are remembered in this browser, even across states.

  3. 3

    Open your comparison

A blue bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Tap Compare on it, or come back to this page any time: it opens your saved list.

  4. 4

    See them side by side

Ratings, nursing hours, fines and CMS flags line up in one table, with the strongest value in each row marked Best. Print it or save it as a PDF to share with family.

Looking for Medicare's Nursing Home Compare?

CMS retired its Nursing Home Compare website in December 2020 and moved the same ratings into Medicare Care Compare. This tool uses that CMS data (star ratings, nurse staffing, inspection citations and fines) for every Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing home, and puts up to four homes in one table. Data from October 2026.

What to look for when you compare

Health inspection rating
The heaviest part of CMS's overall rating, based on what state inspectors found on site. A low inspection rating is worth reading about on the home's page, citation by citation.
Nursing hours per resident per day
How much hands-on care residents get from registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and aides. Compare it to the state median shown on each home's page.
Fines and CMS flags
Fines in the last three years, the CMS abuse icon and Special Focus Facility status point to problems serious enough for CMS to act on. Open the home's page for dates and details.
Medicare, Medicaid and location
Make sure each home takes the coverage you'll use, and think about how often family can visit. A short drive usually means more visits.

Ratings summarize a lot. Before you decide, read each home's latest inspection report, call with your questions, and visit in person, ideally more than once and at different times of day.
